Accutane® (isotretinoin) is an oral medication used to treat severe nodular acne. It is also used to treat cancer such as brain and pancreatic cancer. Although Accutane® is no longer being sold since 2009, generic versions are still available. Accutane® is a known “teratogen”, an environmental or chemical factor that causes a birth defect. Accutane® belongs to a class of chemicals called “retinoids”, which are the second strongest teratogens in humans known today.
Studies have shown Accutane® taken by pregnant women has directly caused birth defects, miscarriages, and even stillborn infant deaths. Severe birth defects ranging from deformities to mental retardation. Accutane® causes severe psychological symptoms which have led to depression and suicide in patients. Other side effects are irritability, aggression, severe fatigue, loss of interest in common activities, mood disturbances, and psychosis.
